TEST DRIVING
We've been meaning to test drive some cars since Karena's car will be breaking down soon. And after having a good, serious conversation about cars, we just decided to go. We test drove the Acura TL and the Audi A4.
The guy at Acura wasn't very supportive and didn't seem to really care at all. Plus, Karena wasn't all that impressed with the car. But we had the opposite experience at Audi.
The guy let us test drive 3 different types of A4 -- one with a bigger engine and one with the all-wheel drive they call "quattro" and one with neither. The guy even let her speed up on the turns to check out the hadnling and drive 55 on the street! Afterwards, they, of course, were ready to make a deal right then and there. We still had to do a little more research.
The problem is too that they cost quite a bit of money and Karena loves her car so much that even though it's having problems, she's trying to hold onto it for as long as possible.
We'll keep you posted.

ROBINSONS-MAY
For those of you who live in Southern California, you know about Robinsons-May. It's my favorite department store because you can get good quality things for not a lot of money. And I think the customer service is far superior to Macy's. In fact, I have had so many bad experiences at Macy's that I asked Karena if we could not register there for our wedding. The problem was, of course, that they had all the good stuff so we were almost forced to.
But anyway, I was disappointed to hear that Robinsons-May will be closing down within the next year after its merger with the evil Macy's. That means no more $50 designer ties for $10 and other good deals like that. The hometown Glendale Galleria will probably replace Robinsons-May with another overpriced dept store like Bloomingdale's. Boooooooo!!!!!!!
The Chinese and Montebello in me is crying today.

KITCHEN SINK
Our kitchen sink suffered a huge leak a few days ago so we've been without the use of it. And let me tell you, it's been tortuous! While we're waiting for the new part to arrive from the manufacturer, we've been washing our pots and pans and dishes in the bathroom sink. Those dinky sinks were not made for pots and pans! It's been a real pain.
Karena's mom was kind enough to glue the busted part so we can hopefully temporarily use our sink until the new part arrives. If not, be prepared to find some plates and silverware on the counter if you use our bathroom.

PICTURES!
I've finally decided to add a few pictures to my blog. I was always in favor of just having text, but I've resisted for long enough.
Anyway, I got to check out Mike's place yesterday and he treated me to a good steak dinner (although it was more expensive than both of us were expecting).
His place was nice and the conversation nicer.
Now, this picture was not from last night, but from a recent dinner we had at Mimi's before Jason and Debbie headed off. I just decided to add this pic since Mike is in it and it's a good picture.

DODGER DEVELOPMENT
I was fascinated to read in this past Sunday's LA Times about the potential endeavors the Dodgers owner has for the area surrounding Dodger Stadium.
Frank McCourt was a real estate developer from Boston when he bought the Dodgers. LA fans feared he would tear down Dodger Stadium and build housing that overlooked the city while being close to downtown. Now it seems like that idea will still happen, while keeping Dodger fans happy.
If they can build a parking structure outside Dodger Stadium, they can use the entire parking area for a development similar to the Grove. They can build an outdoor mall-type area complete with shops and stores and restaurants. Above those areas, apartments will be built where people could live. A new freeway exit from the 5 and 110 would allow drivers to exit straight into the stadium parking garage, similar to how the 5 dumps you right into the Disneyland parking lot. This will encourage people to come to games early to eat and leave late to avoid traffic. Or better yet, they would already live there! Or, they could even park their cars there in the morning and hop on the blue or red lines to get to their downtown jobs and take it back later to attend the game. It's a genius idea.
If McCourt can pull it off, and I think he can and I think he will, he will be rich.
Of course, the team will probably still be lousy.

YOU
We recently watched the movie "Hitch." One of Karena's favorite lines from that movie occurs when Will Smith encourages a guy to buy some new shoes. The dialogue goes something like this:
Guy: I'm not sure about these shoes. They're just not "me."
Will Smith: "You" is a very fluid concept right now. "You" bought the shoes. "You" look good in the shoes.

Karena has since made sure to say that whenver we go shopping. This was the case when she bought me not one, but two pink shirts while outlet shopping. One is more orange and has blue lines in it so I wore that one to church this past Sunday. But the other is definitely more pink and that scares me a little bit. I can only take solace in knowing that it only costed about $8 each.

CHERRY PICKING AND SHOPPING
It was a busy day for the extended Shen family, as 11 of us met up early Saturday morning to drive out to Beaumont (read: really, really far) to go cherry picking. Because we went toward the end of the season, the cherries were smaller and you had to work a little harder to get them. While picking, my sister Sandra and cousin Jonathan even saw a small bear eating the fruit, but he ran away before we could get closer. The highlight was all the pit spitting contests we had. There's just something fun about competing with your wife to see who can spit a pit the farthest!
Afterwards, we were all dehydrated and exhausted, but were willing to deal with it a little longer to go shopping at the Cabazon outlets. Karena was disappointed there was no Banana Republic, but her disappointment quickly melted away at the prospects of buying women's V-neck shirts for $3.50 and men's striped button-down long sleeve shirts for $8.50 at J. Crew. We bought 8 items for under $45 dollars. Amazing.
To end the evening, we all went back to Montebello and had a huge dinner with dessert (and a lot of water to rehydrate) while watching Hitch and doing the Sudoku from the LA Times (Karena has gotten my whole family hooked!)

BUSY
It's been really busy at work (I'm seeing about twice the number of patients I was seeing before) and I haven't been sleeping well in the LA heat (I'm too Chinese to turn on the A/C), but things have been going okay for me (surprisingly enough). Praise God! But keep praying for me.

SUDOKU
For about the last month or so, the LA Times has printed a new logic puzzle each day called Sudoku. Apparently, it's been popular in Japan for years and is the latest craze in logic games. The rules are very easy, but the challenge is not.
I haven't officially sat down to try one yet, but Karena got hooked today at work. After spending a half hour doing one of the LA Times' easier Sudokus, she thought she'd never do another one again. But after finding out the front desk person finished a medium level one in less time, her competitive juices took over. Now, she's sitting down and doing one right now so she can prove to herself (and her co-workers) that's she's no slouch when it comes to sudokus.
Try one.

EYELID
My left eyelid did not flip up after I got up this morning. In fact, it didn't flip up until around dinnertime. This left me looking stupid and non-symmetrical. And that left me feeling really tired too.
(On a side note, somebody once told me that the reason Denzel Washington is so good looking is that his face is perfectly symmetrical. If that's true, I must have been really ugly today.)

BITTERSWEET
I am sad to report that my good friend Mark has suffered a great loss this past week. His father had been battling cancer for quite some time now. But he still made it out to counsel new believers at the Billy Graham Crusade last November. We chatted on the 50 yard line after the last night and exchanged a warm handshake and a hug. That was the last time I ever saw him.
Apparently, his cancer spread and for the last month or so, he had been very sick. He went home to be with the Lord last Saturday.
Please be in prayer for Mark and his family.

JEWISH WEDDING
Two of my long-time patients are mother and daughter (who were featured in last Monday's Health section of the LA Times). We have all grown pretty close to each other, but still it was a surprise to get invited to the daughter's wedding. With the idea of celebrating with them, we decided to attend the Jewish, black tie event held at the Stephen S. Wise Temple in Bel Air.
Because of their Jewish faith, the outdoor ceremony could not begin until after sundown, at around 7:30. Things started out badly because the groom almost fainted. This made me feel bad because I had warned both the mother and daughter about fainting after Raymond's Sandra's sister fainted at their wedding. I felt I had jinxed them.
We were intrigued by all the ceremonies and rituals they go through during the ceremony and all the singing. The ceremony lasted close to an hour and a half. Afterwards, hors d'ouvers were served and tables for sushi and made-to-order pasta were there. Karena got a little annoyed at some of the people cutting in line and pushing her out of the way. This is when I mentioned to her that all these people felt at home, like when we're all at CEFC for a wedding. It just goes to show that even when we're home amongst friends and family, we still need to be on our best behavior and exemplify God's love and grace because we never know who's watching.
The couple had transformed their version of the fellowship hall into a beautiful room and had a 10-member band playing live music and a DJ too. Interestingly enough, the trombone player was also a former patient of mine. By the time dessert was being served, it was nearing 1am. The most interesting thing of the entire evening was seeing how so many people danced during all parts of the night, whether the music was soft rock, jazz, or straight-up gangsta rap. The dance floor was always crowded with the young, the old, and the even older! Trust me, you haven't lived until you've seen a 70 something Jewish couple get down to Snoop Dogg! That type of thing never happens at a Chinese wedding! Needless to say, it was a lot of fun.
Of yeah, last thing: Tyne Daly, from Cagney & Lacey and more recently Judging Amy, was one of the guests and she sang a beautiful song to the happy couple. I had a bet going with Karena whether she was Cagney or Lacey. I lost. She was Lacey.

KABBALAH
We were talking about cults and different world religions at work yesterday when we stumbled upon Kabbalah. Nobody knew much about it, but one of my co-workers said it definitely has the most "street credibility." Intrigued by his answer, we all asked why he thought so.
His answer?
Because Kabbalah spelled backwards is Hala Bbak (as in "holla back!").
Needless to say, he's our work's class clown.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Happy birthday to my dear wifey. Last year, we had a big bash to celebrate her 30th at Lucille's BBQ in Long Beach. This year, it was much less eventful.
I gave her a card in the morning when she woke up. After coming home from work, we sat down to a KFC dinner with homemade salad at around 9pm. I also bought her 3 doughnuts, which she was too full to eat since her sister baked her a cake, which she ate earlier in the day.
I guess we're officially "an old married couple."

STRESSED
There's so much going on in the news these days -- the London bombings, continued insurgency in Iraq, Hurricane Dennis, Karl Rove, summer missionaries, etc. just to name a few.
And yet, I'm too self-centered on my own life and the stress that working overtime and trying to get everything done has caused. I can say that I'm being a poor husband and a poor friend right now. I'm tired, but that's no excuse.
I need to do better. There's people in this world that need love ... and I've been called upon to show it and give it.

LAS VEGAS RECAP
I don't think I've gotten a decent night of sleep since before Raymond's wedding last month. And the sleep deprivation continued.
After having dinner in Monrovia with Jason & Debbie, Richard & Danette, and Michael & Cindy, we stayed up late Thursday night to pack. Friday night, we accompanied Steven and Liz to Las Vegas where we met up with Enoch, Reuel, Tiffany, Simon & Vanessa, and Luong.
The weekend was spent eating buffet and prime rib from Karena's favorite place (read: 32oz prime rib with salad, potato, veggies for $25).
We checked out the new Wynn casino where we met up with K's uncle, who is the manager of the watch/jewelry store there. I was embarassed to be wearing my $55 Fossil watch while he was showing us $250,000 Breitling watches.
Afterward, I got to see the Fremont Light Experience (we stayed in downtown, as usual) for the first time. It was boring.
I was up nearly $200, but ended up just breaking even after a brutal Sunday morning round of craps. Oh well, it's all good.
We came back tired and exhausted. And usually I'd have Tuesday to sleep in since it's my day off. But I'll be working overtime on Tuesdays for the next 6 weeks. So, no rest for the weary.
Zzzzzzz ............

DRAMA CONTINUES
The post-Youth Camp drama continues ...
As we drove up to our house, we found our satellite dish in the trash and all the wiring cut. K's mom and hanydman have been doing A LOT of work on our house -- painting, fixing the roof, repairing the stucco, etc. But her mom thought we had cable and the dish was from the previous owners so she asked that the handyman take it down. It was just miscommunication. Luckily, we salvaged it and he's going to try to put it back up this weekend.

In other news, pray for Jason and Debbie for safety on their travels and strength as they do God's work.

YOUTH CAMP RECAP
Here's the short version:
(1) Mile High Pines should be renamed Mile High Pile of Dirt because it's so dirty there.
(2) But having said that, it's filled with lots of things to do like a hike to a lake for canoeing, all these trust games, rock wall climbing, zip line, leap of faith, etc. Plus, I hear we get it for a pretty good deal so it makes that place ideal.
(3) The campfire/testimony time has definitely been corrupted over the last few years. It's filled with shout-outs to friends and performances. It's a shame because those nights really used to be about glorifying God for what He's done.
(4) After having two rather uneventful (and maybe unsuccessful, if you can call it that) one-on-one encounters with two of my guys, I felt discouraged that God couldn't use me to reach these kids. I should be careful for what I ask for because right after that, I had two different two-hour heart-to-heart talks with two other of my guys.
(5) These kids have a lot more issues and the things they are dealing with were things I didn't encounter until college or beyond. Kids definitely grow up much faster these days.
(6) The last night proved to be extremely emotional and many people (including guys) were crying like babies during a prayer session. Even I couldn't hold back.
(7) Most poignant moment for me: During the prayer time, the counselors were supposed to go to our guys when they raised their hands to say they needed prayer. After one of my guys told me he wanted to reconnect with a friend to establish an accountability partnership, I really wanted the two of them to hook up to pray on their own. But I didn't think it was going to happen so I was going to intervene to make it happen. But as I was about to walk towards them to force it to happen, they found each other on their own to pray. It was amazing and that's when I started crying. Shame on me for doubting God.

SURPRISE
We're exhausted from a fruitful weekend at Youth Camp. More on that in the coming days . . .
But I wanted to share this little surpise I received on Friday:
I got called into my boss office by my boss and the assistant boss. I had let them know that I was interested in a senior position at work (to replace my co-worker who is leaving). Anyway, I hadn't heard anything about that in over 3 weeks and figured they were calling me in about that.
But the news was very different. With stern looks on their faces, they told me that I had received a complaint from a patient that I sexually harassed her while performing a shoulder joint technique. I figured they were joking and blew it off. But they were serious and even brought me into a treatment room to have me demonstrate how I perform these shoulder joint mobilizations. I was freaking out! My mind was racing through names of all my female shoulder patients, but I was so scared, I couldn't even think of one.
After performing a few techniques, they concluded that I was performing them properly. And as they were walking me back to their office, they suddenly stopped to say, "By the way, congratulations on being named one of our new senior therapists!"
It was a cruel joke, but I was happy about the news so I didn't mind at all.
